HOD’S WELCOME ADDRESS

You are welcome to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, where we raise manpower to restore mobility, relieve pain, and give people back their independence.

Orthopaedic Surgery is that branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injuries and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, with the nerves and vessels that accompany these structures).

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the Obafemi Awolowo University is the oldest established separate department of Orthopaedics in any Nigerian University. It has produced dedicated manpower for teaching the knowledge of the subject and treating patients with orthopaedic problems nationally and internationally.

We appreciate the foresight of the founding fathers of the Department and all the Heads of Department and Professors that have continued to grow the Department. The Department has no doubt grown in leaps and bounds. As we work hard to overcome our present challenges and take giant strides to greater heights, let us continue to work in team spirit, teach our students the morals and ethics of the profession, and implant the culture of innovation and collaboration.

My wish for the Department is to become a centre of excellence and innovation as we deepen our teaching, improve our patients’ outcomes, and perform innovative research in this field of medicine.

I wish you all a great and enjoyable time in our Department.
